Compare and Contrast Essay

Have you ever felt lost, at the bottom, tired, and wanting a better life for yourself and your family? Well this is how Kino felt in the book The Pearl by John Steinbeck, and also how Chris Gardner felt in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness. These characters were poor, stressed, and in need of help. In this writing we will compare how Kino felt with distraught and poor wealth in his life compared to Chris’s same life’s.
First let’s compare these two characters Starting with the book The Pearl. Kino and his wife and baby are a part of a poor community which live in small huts and have very little food to eat. While in The Pursuit of Happyness Chris needs a job more now than he did since his wife left, so he’ll do anything to give his son a place to sleep, food to eat, and a future. So these two families are both struggling with financial needs to provide for themselves and for their families. They also are both trying to make sure they have a future for themselves and their kids that will be long lived and don’t have to be worried about money and expenses.
Now let’s contrast these two characters in their lives. In the movie The Pursuit of Happyness Chris is looking for a job to provide for his son. Chris is a salesman with a young son who is failing in his attempts at selling a very expensive device that is only slightly better than a regular X-ray machine. On the other hand Kino in The Pearl was only thinking about what he would do once he sold the pearl. Buy a rifle, buy a better home, better clothes, and food for his wife and son. He was selfish when his wife told him to throw it back into the ocean and get rid of the horrible object only bringing them bad luck. Kino wouldn’t listen.
Both these characters have many things they share in common but also so many things they don’t. The book The Pearl by John Steinbeck, and the movie The Pursuit of Happyness. These characters were poor, stressed, and in need of help. I hope you see what people lives can be like and learned something from my essay.
